Happy Valley Water Park

Project Location:

China

Scope of Work:

Concept Design, Schematic Design

Project Size:

55,000 sqm

Design Requirements

- The area allocated to the proposed waterpark was limited to five hectares within an existing 20 hectare theme park that had already established itself as one of the most popular family attractions in Beijing.
- Client requested a new “Space-Mayan” theme for the waterpark that still fit within the Mayan theme of the existing theme park. The waterpark should have its own distinct and iconic visual identity that would encourage families to visit again for both recreational and educational purposes
- Within the 5 hectares of land, the client requested a variety of programs and attractions which included: a 7000 sq m wave pool, various tube and body slides, a themed children’s play area, and a 500m long lazy river. With a limited budget, the turnaround for both design and construction phases were very tight and left little room for schedule changes

Our Approach

- To ensure the proposed waterpark integrated seamlessly with the look and feel of the existing theme park, an extensive view study was performed from all angles to maximize opportunities for theme park / water park interaction. Furthermore, back-of-house facilities and service circulation routes were designed to optimize usage of the current infrastructure while connecting new and existing service routes
- The waterpark was divided into five distinct zones - each with themed elements thoughtfully placed throughout. Together they created a storyline fusing both Space and Mayan concepts together into one cohesive narrative. Embedded into the theming were informative signs and placards that shared more about Mayan culture to guarantee that educational requirements were met in a fun and accessible way
- The existing theme park had a large mountain feature that was utilized in the waterpark as a starting platform for many slides and attractions, which helped to save space, and lower construction costs. Additionally within the tight schedule, our team was able to carefully select vibrant colours and design custom patterns for each slide to create a unique and iconic family experience
