Mermaid World Resort
Project Location:
China
Scope of Work:
Concept Design
Project Size:
6 Hectare
Design Requirements
- The park was to be situated at the base of a large mountainside, surrounded by an existing amusement park, a large aquarium, and a temple complex. While this area was popular with tourists and locals, the proposed water park had to draw in visitors with its own unique identity and exciting rides that were distinct from the other attractions in the area.
- The terrain of the proposed site was very mountainous and uneven. To reduce the impact of construction on the land, any proposed rides and landscape elements should be designed to work in harmony with the terrain, in an attempt to preserve the natural look and feel of the surrounding environment.
- In conjunction with the waterpark, a large hotel and indoor snow-themed recreational building was to be built surrounding the park. Therefore, any entry into the park had to be seamless and efficient as the entrance plaza would also be shared with two other large attractions.
Our Approach
- A thoroughly developed “mermaid” theme was integrated into the design of the park, capturing a broad audience with an interesting storyline and playful visuals that paired well with water rides and family experiences. The mermaid theme was also reflected in the architecture by incorporating “fishing village” elements into buildings, ride structures, and wayfinding signs throughout the park. Through the implementation of these thematic elements, the natural landscape was not overshadowed, but rather worked together with the architecture to create a comfortable and immersive themed environment.
- Rides and paths were designed around the three prominent hills onsite, providing interesting opportunities for guests to feel like they are a part of the terrain - sliding down the sides of hills and climbing up paths to gain access to beautiful vantage points. Doing so allowed aspects of the natural environment to shine through while seamlessly integrating with the chosen theme.
- The entrance plaza included three separate entry points into the waterpark, hotel, and the indoor snow building to form a cohesive hub. The plaza was designed to be large enough to handle the capacity that the three attractions would attract, and circulation routes were carefully analyzed so that guests could efficiently travel from one area to the next. With all three programs working together, a larger resort park was created that encouraged visitors to not only play, but stay on the property for an extended amount of time.
